In 2004, The Learning and Skills Council commissioned FSI to create an educational programme for sustainable approaches to water. More ...
- Breathe of Fresh Air
In 2003, FSI won a Department of the Environment Pilot Award with Hanson School, Bradford to develop a flagship programme on air quality. More ...
- Asset Liability Management
Oceans-ESU Ltd run an Environmental Information Management Unit on behalf of some of its clients for the purpose of asset and liability management within the context of current legislation. The Unit gathers and collates information on all potential and ongoing issues and liabilities relating to their portfolio of property.
On an individual site basis, the Unit carries out Desk Top Studies on sites where purchase is being considered. Should the project then be given the go-ahead, the Unit will design and implement an investigation strategy based upon previous site use and current legislative requirements. More ...
- Braehead contaminated land remediation
Oceans-ESU Limited has professionally managed all the environmental requirements the Braehead
Development has had over the past eight years. They have enabled us to turn environmental
liabilities into financial assets.

- Gas Works Remediation
Oceans-ESU was commissioned to supervise the extension of a large trading store. The site had formerly been occupied by a Town Gas production plant. These plants used to generate gas for street lighting by a complex sequence of chemical processes, and are notorious for having often caused severe ground contamination.

- Millennium Project, Greenwich
The Millennium Store project offers a good example of how we can work effectively to provide solutions and support from the earliest stages of a project. More ...
- Pesticide Remediation
Oceans-ESU has developed a reputation for innovative solutions to non-standard problems. One early project was the clean up of a site which had been a pesticide factory in southern England. More ...
- Site Investigation, York
Site investigation of old gas works adjacent to river and with underlying aquifer More ...
- BAA Gatwick reactive precipitation study
The Problem
BAA was experiencing operational difficulties from with lime-scale build-up in the BOD sampling and pollution diverter units in the Fire Training Area at Gatwick Airport. The units were unable to operate due to the rapid build up of a precipitate, preventing the measurement of BOD for compliance with the EA discharge consent. Thus large volumes of surface water from the Fire Training Area and groundwater were being tankered away from the site. More ...
- Flocculation and solvent extraction study to optimise soil washing
The Problem
An extremely contaminated site in Selly Oak had been used as a foundry since 1900. The site was very large and extensively contaminated with heavy metals. Soil washing was proposed an economical solution to traditional ?dig and dump? of contaminated material, but the site was so extensive that this technique needed to be optimised. More ...
- Monitoring dissolved phase organics and bio assays
The Problem
Produced water from the oil fields of Africa is being treated through an extensive reed bed treatment system. The water is monitored using fluorescence spectrophotometry to ensure that there are no dissolved phase organics. Trees, fish and food crops such as water melons and cucumbers have been grown successfully in the water. Now we need to know if they accumulate organic contaminants at low levels. More ...
- Chemical Industry
Reed beds have been used since 1990 to treat a complex chemical waste stream created during chemical manufacturing More ...
- Groundwater Clean-up: chlorinated solvent
Oceans-ESU was called in to advise upon clean-up of a site affected by chlorinated solvents. More ...
- Landfill leachate and reed beds
Reed beds metabolise organic liquid contaminants and adsorb heavy metals More ...
- Produced Oil in the Middle East
Oceans-ESU worked with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), a subsidiary of Shell International, in a water recycling and agricultural project on the oil fields of the Sultanate of Oman. The project radically re-addressed the way the petroleum industry deals with water pollution problems. More ...
- Reed Bed Technology in Oily Groundwater Remediation
In 1996, Oceans-ESU was invited to Youngs Paraffin Light Mineral Oils teamed up with reed bed specialists, to remediate contaminated land and groundwater from the oil mining and detergent plant at this site in Scotland. More ...
- Reed beds and airports
Treatment of run-off from fire-training grounds More ...

- Smart Development Project
Oceans-ESU are providers of showcase reed bed treatment systems to remediate hydrocarbon-contaminated land and water. In March 1998, we won a £70,000 DTI 'Smart' Award to develop a new reed bed technology for treating hydrocarbon-contaminated wastewater from petrol station forecourts. During the subsequent 16 month feasibility study we developed a prototype treatment. In 1999, we were awarded a second Smart Innovation Grant to partially fund an ambitious £300,000 development project to develop the prototype to marketable stage. More ...
- Surface water and foul waste on petrol filling stations
Oceans-ESU designed, constructed and installed a reed bed system to meet the unique demands of the situation, which treats the foul drainage and hydrocarbon-contaminated surface run-off, while assuring safe operation of the facilities in terms of odour and contamination risk. Treated water is discharged to a stream. More ...
